The Carsphairn Heritage Group was set up in 1987 with the aim of firstly exhibiting articles, objects and information relating to the history of the Carsphairn district, secondly to establish heritage trails to encourage visits to sites of special interest in the area and thirdly to have meetings and visits on matters relating to the history of the parish.
The first members were mostly local and shared a common interest in gathering information, items, photographs, and stories during the winter months. In the summer an exhibition of this material was held in the village hall for just a fortnight.
As a result of the Heritage Group`s existence, information of local interest, family history, and an assortment of items have found their way to committee members. These items were kept in members houses, under beds, in attics, boxes etc. until the Heritage Centre was built in 1992.
We have a Heritage Centre which is full of information about the past and present in Carsphairn, and a series of walks and drives which show the history of this upland community. Due to afforestation the population has been steadily in decline for many years but that gives local historians the opportunity to delve into the ruins and artefacts knowing that there has been little disturbance since people lived there.
In the Heritage Centre there is a permanent timespan exhibition which depicts the history of the community from pre-historic times to present day. Each year now there is an exhibition depicting aspects of past community life and history.
