From Polmaddy to Carsphairn
This walk is about 4.5 miles. It is along an old pack road which passes through forestry and open hill so warm clothing and boots may be necessary.
This walk is closed for lambing season between mid April and mid May
This walk begins at the medieval village of Polmaddy which is well worth investigating. It is a classic example of a Galloway village before the improvements and clearances of the 1700s and 1800s when it was abandoned. Among the remains are to be found several corn drying kilns, a smiddy, an inn right alongside the old pilgrimage route between Strathclyde and Whithorn (the pack road), a primitive watermill and a lade to a mill pond which is over half a mile long.
This walk also shows the beauty of the Range of hills known as the Rhinns of Kells, the highest of which is Corserine at 813 metres high.
Other points of interest on this walk are the neolithic burial site, located near the Carnavel farm, and 10th Century medieval crosses near Braidenoch.
